Chilean President Gabriel Boric announces new metro line to Santiago Airport

02/06/2025 The project, announced by the president in his 2025 State of the Nation address, aims to connect the upcoming Line 7 of the Santiago Metro with Santiago Airport in just 7 minutes.

On Monday, June 2, President Gabriel Boric Font provided additional details about the future Line A of the Santiago Metro from Cerro Navia. This new line will directly connect Santiago Airport with the underground train network.

During the announcement, the President was accompanied by several key figures, including Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications Juan Carlos Muñoz, Minister of Public Works Jessica López, Undersecretary of Tourism Verónica Pardo, Metro President Guillermo Muñoz, Nuevo Pudahuel's CEO Nicolás Claude, Metropolitan Region Governor Claudio Orrego, Presidential Delegate for the Metropolitan Region Gonzalo Durán, and the mayors of Cerro Navia, Mauro Tamayo, and Pudahuel, Ítalo Bravo.

The President emphasized, “We are here to continue improving the quality of life for Chileans.” "The Metro has always been essential to the people living in the capital, as it serves as the backbone of the public transportation system in Santiago and exemplifies the best of public services. We take great pride in the Metro,” he stated. He added, “It represents a significant investment made by the state, with each government contributing to the expansion through new routes. This is not just a project of progress; it also marks a new level of intermodality, allowing travelers to start their journey at a Metro station and finish it by disembarking from a plane in another city, whether in Chile or around the world.”

With an investment of $365 million, the upcoming Line A will elevate Santiago de Chile to the level of major cities such as New York, Atlanta, Stockholm, London, and Amsterdam. This new line will connect the future station in Mapocho with Huelén on Line 7 in Cerro Navia, and it will also link to Santiago Airport in the municipality of Pudahuel in just seven minutes. This project will significantly reduce public transport travel time from the center of the capital, cutting it from 84 minutes to just 30 minutes—a time savings of over 60%.

In 2024, the airport is projected to record a record 25.8 million passengers, representing a 13% increase compared to 2023. Estimates suggest that approximately 9.5 million passengers will use the new Line A, with each trip costing around 3,000 pesos for the section to the airport. Line A will be 6.5 kilometers long and will cross the Costanera Norte and Vespucio Norte highways. It will feature two stations, one in each district. Both stations will have platform doors and be universally accessible. The trains will meet the same standards as those currently in operation on Lines 6 and 3, including automatic driving, air conditioning, and onboard security cameras.
